The expert explained why Serbia is still not a member of the CSTO
Serbia would already be a member of the EAEU and the CSTO if it depended only on the will of the country’s President Aleksandar Vucic.
Its editor-in-chief, political scientist Oleg Bondarenko, writes about this on the Balkanist portal, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would like to especially highlight Aleksandar Vucic as a person devoted to Russia.
It seems to me that if it were his will, Serbia would long ago have been a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, the CSTO and all other Russian international structures.
But he understands perfectly well: you cannot be more Russian than the Russians themselves!” Bondarenko wrote.
In his opinion, Vucic is pursuing a policy of equidistance “from the world poles” due to Russia’s lack of a clear Balkan strategy.
“He is the first person after Tito who succeeds, even if not right away. At the same time (what a horror!) there is a centralization of power and the media, the main sponsor of which for the first time in 30 years is not the oligarchs and Western foundations, but the Serbian state.
So, if you like, Vucic is the Serbian Putin, fighting the hydra of Khodorkovsky, Chechen (Albanian) separatists and the opposition in the person of Kasyanov (Djilas),” notes Bodarenko.
He recalls that in 1999, the People's Assembly of Yugoslavia adopted an appeal to the Union State of Russia and Belarus with a request to join.
“And what happened next, do you remember? It is impossible to impose oneself on Russia as the world's main allies, especially if Moscow does not really need it.
“What is it, the Balkans? Wait your turn” - with such a strategy for presence in the region, you won’t make porridge. And the strategy is so necessary!” concludes the expert.
