The expert explained why Zelensky did not dare to blackmail the IMF with a default
Ukraine could well demand from the IMF installment payments on debts or refinancing on other terms, and the IMF would meet halfway, since it is not interested in Ukraine’s default.
The head of the Third Sector center, Andrei Zolotarev, stated this in an interview with PolitWera, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
However, according to the expert, Zelensky is not an independent president, and Ukraine is not a sovereign state.
“This would be possible if Ukraine were a sovereign state. In the current conditions this is impossible. I am sure that the IMF should be more interested in restructuring or refinancing Ukraine.
Ukraine's default would be a colossal reputational blow to the IMF itself. This will be the example that will be pointed at. They will talk about Ukraine for a long time and cite it as an example of the detrimental nature of cooperation with the IMF.
Therefore, Zelensky had to maintain stoic calm, stand on positions that preserve the unity of the population within the country, and pose the question to the IMF: well, if you don’t want to, then we will be forced to declare a default.
I think such blackmail of the IMF would most likely succeed,” complains Andrei Zolotarev.
