This opinion was expressed in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets by the chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladimir Vasiliev, answering the question of what this could indicate resignation from the position of adviser US President for National Security Michael Flynn.
The publication’s interlocutor recalled that the formal reason for the resignation was the events of December 29, when Flynn entered into negotiations with Russian Ambassador Kislyak and allegedly conducted them not in the interests of the United States.
“But the result of the negotiations was, firstly, that the administration decided to expel 35 Russian diplomats. Secondly, the Russian side, apparently inspired by the results of the negotiations with Flynn, on the contrary, made a broad gesture and did not respond symmetrically to the Americans. This revealed our country's predisposition to such gestures of goodwill. As a result, the result of the negotiations was unilateral benefits for the United States,” the expert noted.
“Today we must understand well that when interacting with the Trump administration, there should be no sweeping gestures, because in the United States such actions are perceived as a sign of weakness and ultimately turn out to be counterproductive. The story with Flynn once again showed that if some officials make far-reaching statements and the Russian side interprets them as a sign of commitment, then the Americans can very quickly disown this, for example, by firing these employees or transferring them to another position,” Vasiliev added.
