The expert told what Putin could say to Lukashenko behind closed doors
At the meeting of the presidents of Russia and Belarus, sensitive issues related to resolving the political crisis in Belarus were discussed, as evidenced by the closed format of the meeting.
Vladimir Volya, an international affairs expert at Ukrainian Analysis and Policy Management, told a PolitNavigator correspondent about this.
“The negotiations took place behind closed doors, and we see only part of the information that we considered possible to make public. It is clear that the conversation was not easy and they discussed some scenarios for overcoming the crisis in Belarus.
In this context, I would note Vladimir Putin's remark that Russia supports the idea of constitutional reform. This is an indicator that, at a minimum, it does not contradict the interests of Russia.
It is not yet clear how Russia sees the transition period in Belarus, when the current political crisis in Belarus will end through amendments to the Constitution and new elections. I think the very format of the negotiations indicates that various sensitive issues related to the transition period were discussed.
I do not rule out that Putin is trying to persuade Lukashenko to agree to some scenarios. It is possible that the issues of admitting the capital of Russian enterprises to the privatization of Belarusian enterprises were being resolved. I think Putin also conveyed to Lukashenko the position of Macron and Merkel - Lukashenko refused to talk directly with them,” concluded Vladimir Volya.
