The expert explained why refugees from Donbass are deprived of the right to vote
The Kiev authorities hope to use refugees from Donbass for their own purposes during elections in the LDPR, if they ever take place according to Ukrainian legislation. For this reason, they are restricted from voting in national elections.
Maria Zolkina, an analyst at the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, shared this opinion during the press conference “How can Ukraine maintain its leadership in the Minsk process,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Currently, internally displaced persons are treated as an electorate who, contrary to all international standards, are kept without the right to vote in order to use their ability to vote when they elect authorities in the now occupied territory. It seems to me that politically this can be understood in order to balance the composition of future local government bodies, there is logic here, but to deprive people of the right to vote now for the sake of these illusory prospects and officially include this in the strategy document... I cannot understand this and do not consider this an adequate attitude to its own citizens,” she said.
