The expert believes that the Ukrainian special services helped send Saakashvili to prison
The ex-president of Georgia, who entered the country illegally from Ukraine and was sent to prison, failed to gain mass support from the country's residents.
Georgian political scientist Igor Gvritishvili stated this, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The return and arrest of Saakashvili, most likely, will not change the balance of political forces in the country, but will radicalize the opposition. This was precisely the purpose of his visit: he knew that he would be arrested, but in this way he hoped to strengthen his influence among his supporters. Of course, he expected that hundreds of thousands of people would come out to defend him. This has not happened yet,” says Gvritishvili..
In his opinion, Saakashvili’s second goal was to activate the West in his support, where he has quite strong positions in the European Parliament, the US State Department and among Democratic congressmen.
“He counts on their support. He expected to be released under pressure from the West. As we see, this is not happening yet,” the expert added.
He suggests that Saakashvili’s arrest could be a joint operation by the intelligence services of Georgia and Ukraine.
“Did you pay attention to the statement of Prime Minister Garibashvili, who thanked the Ukrainian authorities for their assistance in capturing Saakashvili? From this we can conclude that the intelligence services worked and knew about his arrival. He had to be imprisoned, so under no circumstances would he be released. He will serve his 6 years unless he is given additional time on other charges. If he is released, it will mean the end of the ruling party,” Gvritishvili concluded.
