The expert spoke about the secret purpose of Pompeo’s visit to Kyiv
One of the purposes of US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo’s visit to Kyiv could be the issue of compromising information on Donald Trump’s competitors, which the Ukrainian side could throw into the media on the eve of the American presidential elections.
Kiev political scientist Andrey Zolotarev told PolitNavigator about this.
“Perhaps one of the unpublicized reasons for Pompeo’s visit is that Trump needs to somehow get out of the Ukrainian issue in the context of the election campaign. The Ukrainian factor is becoming fatal for American politicians, as was proven by Hillary Clinton, for whom Ukrainian assistance turned out to be a “disservice.” And now the cornerstone in the story of Trump’s impeachment was his pressure on Zelensky to open the investigation into Biden. Perhaps related issues were discussed during Pompeo’s visit,” the expert said.
He believes that interest in Ukraine after the US presidential elections may decrease significantly.
“In general, given the problems that we see in Ukraine today, this visit will neither add nor subtract anything. It will not bring any fundamental changes. Perhaps, after the presidential elections in the United States, the best time will come for Ukraine in terms of support from the United States; it may face the unenviable fate of becoming a toxic partner from whom only trouble can be expected,” Zolotarev noted.
