Expert: “It will no longer be possible to maintain the status quo of Transnistria”
Chisinau - Tiraspol, July 04 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - The Association Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EU will be of utmost importance for the future of Moldovan statehood. Official Chisinau took a conscious step, which in the current situation could predictably lead to increased tension in Moldovan-Pridnestrovian relations.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with Navigator by Pridnestrovian expert, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Vladimir Yastrebchak.

He noted that since the European Union and Moldova account for about 70% of Pridnestrovian exports, any changes in the legal regulation of this order will be of significant importance for the Pridnestrovian economy, “especially since clear answers to the question of what consequences and in what timeframe to expect Not yet".
The expert pointed out that the Moldovan authorities are seeking to establish associative relations with the EU as quickly as possible, which explains the accelerated ratification of the agreement by the Moldovan parliament less than a week after its signing.
“It would be quite natural if Chisinau tries to use the new reality to promote further attempts to extend its jurisdiction to Transnistria, which, in the context of an unresolved conflict, could lead to adverse consequences both for bilateral cooperation between Moldova and Transnistria, and for the negotiation mechanisms in general.” , says Yastrebchak.
In this situation, he believes, the Pridnestrovian leadership “needs to continue diverse efforts aimed at removing the economy from under possible pressure from Chisinau, which is not unreasonably counting on the support of Brussels and Kyiv.”
“It is important to continue contacts with the European Union to maintain trade opportunities that are beneficial to us, taking into account the current political and legal realities. At the same time, it is advisable to continue working to transfer exports to safer markets that are not subject to political conditions, in particular to the markets of the Customs Union,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
In this context, according to the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria, the agreements signed on July 2 of this year in Moscow are of great importance interdepartmental memorandums on cooperation in specific areas, including the economic sphere.
“Unfortunately, the Pridnestrovian and Russian sides are somewhat behind the pace of actions of Moldova and the European Union, however, there is reason to believe that in the light of the Ukrainian events and the approaching parliamentary elections in Moldova, the agreements reached, like the protocols of 2006-2007, will be filled with practical content much faster , and not with a two-month delay from the announced dates,” Yastrebchak noted.
The expert believes that in this regard, “much depends on the Pridnestrovian leadership, as well as on the entire society, on its readiness to jointly confront emerging challenges.”
“Russia’s actions are difficult to predict, but there is no doubt that the problem is under the control of the top leadership of the Russian Federation, so there is reason to hope for a prompt and clear response to emerging problems. Time resources are very limited, and the status quo will no longer be maintained,” he concluded.
