The expert ridiculed the thesis of Minsk political scientists - “Babariko is Gazprom’s candidate”
The former head of the board of Belgazprombank, Viktor Babariko, is not Gazprom’s protege in the presidential elections in Belarus.
Leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund Igor Yushkov stated this on the PolitWera YouTube channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I very much doubt that Gazprom wanted to interfere in political processes in Belarus, and the decision on the participation of the former head of Bezgazprombank in the presidential elections was Gazprom’s initiative. There may be different interpretations as to whether this was his independent decision or not, but Gazprom has no benefit from it,” Yushkov said.
He ridiculed the thesis, which has recently been promoted by Belarusian political scientists close to President Alexander Lukashenko, that the Russian fuel and energy complex (FEC) wants to interfere in Belarusian politics.
“It is not clear why the Russian fuel and energy complex needs this (if we can even talk about a single fuel and energy complex). Let's say this candidate wins the election. And what? Will he raise gas prices for Belarus or stop asking for discounts? No, he will continue to do this because it is logical for the buyer. What tasks will the mythical Russian fuel and energy complex set for it? It’s not clear,” explains Yushkov.
The thesis of Belarusian political scientists about the possible nationalization of the gas transportation system of Belarus, which was bought and modernized by Gazprom, seems strange to him. According to Yushko, in this case, Belarus will have to pay the Russian monopolist about $7 billion.
