Expert opinion: The death of the opposition mayor of Krivoy Rog changes the balance of power in the city
In Krivoy Rog, whose mayor was found shot to death on the threshold of your home, you need to quickly hold re-elections.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics Ruslan Bortnik stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent, commenting on the death of the mayor of Krivoy Rog Konstantin Pavlov.
“The death, of course, is terrible, one can only sympathize with the family and friends. It will have political consequences for the president's hometown. The balance of power in the city is changing, the political power of the president is strengthening, who will actually govern the city through the secretary. At the same time, residents voted for a candidate of a different political force,” Bortnik noted.
“Of course, this will cause some reaction. Therefore, it is necessary to quickly make decisions about re-elections in this city so that citizens again elect the mayor they want.
I hope that the local council will quickly draw up the documents, and the Verkhovna Rada will make a decision on early elections in Krivoy Rog. Because in such a situation, with suspicions about the possible murder of the mayor, it would be wrong to leave the city under the control of the secretary for a long time. A new full-fledged mayor is needed,” the political scientist added.
“At the national level, this most likely will not have any serious consequences, although in any case, whether it is murder or suicide, we are talking about the death of a person who is closely associated with one of the key business groups. This death may influence a change in attitude towards the authorities,” Bortnik concluded.
Konstantin Pavlov won the election for mayor of Krivoy Rog, the hometown of President Vladimir Zelensky, in December 2020. He was a candidate from the OPZZH.
