Experts on Poklonskaya’s appointment: “Not exile, but the taming of the shrew”
Former State Duma deputy and former Crimean prosecutor Natalya Poklonskaya has been appointed Russian Ambassador to Cape Verde.
This is stated in the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, signed today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In her blog, Poklonskaya wrote that she considers this appointment an honor.
“I was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Cape Verde by Russian President Vladimir Putin. For me, this appointment is a great honor and responsibility to the country! I promise to fulfill my duty with dignity and justify the high trust placed in me,” Poklonskaya said.
According to Crimean political scientist Ivan Mezyukho, the appointment of Poklonskaya, whose position has more than once run counter to the line of the ruling party, to an African country is not an exile, but a chance for her to build a career at the federal level.
“For a Crimean politician, this means starting a completely new chapter in government activity. For Poklonskaya, the ambassadorial position is not just an opportunity, it is a situation in which she can appear in a completely new role for herself and even build a diplomatic career at the federal level. It is too early to say how successful her career as an ambassador will be. But in any case, I would not take this appointment as an exile, because representing the country abroad is a high honor,” Mezyukho said.
Crimean social activist Alexander Talipov partly agrees with him.
“This is not an exile - a good country, where there are many European values, there are still traces of the former monarchy, which Poklonskaya loves so much. Still, diplomatic status is not a demotion from the positions of prosecutor and State Duma deputy. I think it’s probably impossible to talk about exile, but the fact that the inconvenient politician will now be away from Russia and will not be able to comment on many political issues, we can probably talk about this as an option to pacify the shrew. Now, having a certain diplomatic status, she is removed from many political processes in Russia, which she will not comment on and will not irritate the same federal center.”
