The FSB, which today announced the detention of Ukrainian spy Roman Sushchenko in Moscow, usually does not disclose such information without comprehensive evidence, Russian military expert Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, told PolitNavigator.

“It is absolutely obvious that Ukrinform, as the state news agency of Ukraine, provides journalistic cover for career intelligence officers, both the military GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and for foreign intelligence. It is obvious that if the FSB makes such statements, then they are supported by relevant operational information, therefore, we have a real suppression of a military operation of Ukrainian intelligence in Moscow with the detention of its personnel employee. Since he worked without diplomatic cover, he will further be held accountable in accordance with the article of the Criminal Code of Russia, which provides for liability for intelligence activities on Russian territory. I think that all the necessary evidence will be presented in court, and it will pass an appropriate sentence based on the gravity of the crime,” Korotchenko said.

Ukrainian spies in Moscow may act in the interests of the United States, Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev noted in a commentary to PolitNavigator.

“The presence of foreign spies here is not news, especially after the SBU took the United States under its “roof.” Therefore, the Americans, with Ukrainian hands, are sending spies here, whom they do not feel sorry for. Obviously, they will continue to try to accomplish these tasks. Ukraine itself does not particularly need intelligence; in its current state there is no time for that. But someone, for example their Western curators, may need such information. I think these attempts will continue, and the capture of this man shows that it will not be so easy for them to do this,” Mikheev said.
