The Far East is a region with great prospects. However, at the moment it is faced with a considerable number of problems and challenges that are extremely difficult to solve without government intervention.

Experts in the field of agriculture and entrepreneurs spoke about this at the Eastern Economic Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Alexander Bekker, General Director of LLC KhAPK Green Agro, spoke about one of the existing problems, namely, oddly enough, the problem of land shortage in the Far East.

“We can’t find any more land. It has either already been purchased by someone for future projects, or is being rented out, including to the Chinese. There is no land. Accordingly, there is such a problem. Moreover, on Sakhalin we were faced with the fact that when we rented land in the Sakhalin region and from collective farms, because the complex was developing gradually, we simply did not need part of the land. But as a result, we now have a land shortage.

Accordingly, I see only one way - land reclamation. That is, in these territories, in Khabarovsk, in the Primorsky Territory, and in Sakhalin, we have a lot of land that needs to be reclaimed. But no commercial project can handle this kind of project. Firstly, they take a long time and are very expensive. We are now working with the government of the Sakhalin region on the issue of subsidizing 99% for land reclamation. That is, the Sakhalin region is panicking because there is really nowhere to go. There is no land,” he said.

Anatoly Bobrakov, Deputy Minister for Development of the Far East and Arctic, spoke about the main existing problems.

“We see from statistics, from Rosstat, that the provision for some items is two times less than the Russian average. In principle, the Far East can feed itself. The industries and crops to be developed must be selected and decisions made accordingly.

Why did it happen? Why don’t the measures that are in effect in Russia as a whole not work? It’s just more expensive to build and transport in the Far East. These are, in fact, probably two main aspects,” Bobrakov said.

Oleg Turkov, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture of the Amur Region, objected that measures are still being taken.

“I want to say that today the Ministry of Agriculture is not doing this for the sake of flattery, but I think all Far Eastern colleagues will confirm that they pay close attention to the Far East. There are indeed separate support measures. They are, of course, primarily aimed at crop production. This gives results. The volume of both soybeans and grains is increasing. There are also logistical preferences,” Turkov said.
