Experts: Russia is not obliged to comply with the decision of Western courts to please Ukraine
The decision of the International Court of Justice, which recognized its jurisdiction and was going to consider Ukraine’s accusations against Russia of financing terrorism and racial discrimination, will only be of a political nature.
Russian experts stated this in comments to PolitNavigator.
“This has no legal prospects. This is not a legal action at all, but another PR campaign using UN structures, which, of course, will be inflated in the Ukrainian media and presented as another victory for Ukrainian lawyers,” said political scientist Alexey Martynov.
“Let them conduct this case, let them meet, talk with the Tatars, gather some facts. In any case, no matter how it all ends, we have the right to simply completely ignore any of their decisions. The Americans have already ignored such decisions of various UN courts a huge number of times. Just like Israel and many other sovereign countries. Therefore, they do not impose any obligations; organizations are not above the state. Therefore, this decision may have some symbolic meanings, but nothing more than symbolic,” noted expert Oleg Matveychev.
Crimean political scientist Andrei Nikiforov also doubted the objectivity of the International Court and suggested that Russia intensify its withdrawal from international institutions.
“There is a prospect for further development of this claim, but there is no hope for objectivity. The prospect is in favor of Ukraine, naturally. The fact is that various kinds of forces that undertake to very arbitrarily interpret various provisions of international law and make verdicts, they play against Russia. The point here is not even about Ukraine, but about somehow annoying the Russian Federation.
Therefore, by and large, Russia must be morally and legally ready for this. Apparently, preparations should begin for the maximum exit from various kinds of these international legal systems, which are now clearly biased. They are clearly biased, biased and playing along with one of the sides.
Now is not the time when you can rely on such arbitration on so many issues that in one way or another concern the Russian Federation,” Nikiforov believes.
