Experts: Russia will not be able to answer Lithuania economically for Kaliningrad
In a situation where Lithuania has banned the transit of a number of goods through its territory to the Kaliningrad region, Russia may find itself in a difficult situation.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, was expressed by Moscow political scientist Sergei Markov.
“There is a viscous struggle, butting. But here we may find ourselves in a difficult situation, because we no longer have the ability to create problems for them: we have already refused any transit through Lithuania.
But there is a sharper way - to warn them that the attempt to blockade Kaliningrad grossly violates the agreement between Lithuania and Kaliningrad, and Russia can choose the forceful path to unblock the region,” Markov told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
According to Andrey Suzdaltsev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russia has the opportunity to economically protect the Kaliningrad region.
“Kaliningrad can be supplied by air. Through the Baltic and the Gulf of Finland. And, of course, there is a sea route - dry cargo ships, ferries. It will be costly, but these are our people and our territories. We will supply as best we can,” says the economist.
At the same time, he believes that now Russia has “nothing special to respond to.”
“They hardly consume our gas. We do not supply them with electricity directly. There used to be supplies, but now there are none. They prepared for this. And I think this is just the beginning, over time they will close the passenger railway service,” warns Suzdaltsev.
