Changes to the Ukrainian Constitution regarding the non-existent “Autonomous Republic of Crimea” of the Crimean Tatars since 2014 will supposedly become a powerful signal for Russia.

This was stated at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada by the deputy head of the Mejlis banned in the Russian Federation, a deputy from Eurosolidarity Akhtem Chiygoz, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Today exactly seven years ago, Reshat Ametov was kidnapped, brutally tortured and killed for a peaceful picket against the Russian occupier. I ask you to honor the memory of our heroes who gave their lives for their Motherland, for Ukraine,” Chiygoz said.

“Russia is a terrorist country,” the Mejlis member announced after a minute of silence. “He is trying to continue to break the will of the Crimean Tatar people and our patriotic citizens in Crimea, in the fight for our will, for their homeland and for Ukraine.”

He stated that he supports the idea of the “Crimean platform”, but demands the speedy adoption of bills on the status of the Crimean Tatar people and the “ARC”.

“This is our responsibility, our parliament’s. This concerns the law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine and the status of the Crimean Tatar people. Finally, the state of Ukraine needs it to accept changes to the Constitution regarding the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. This will be a powerful signal for our enemy - Russia. This will be a very powerful signal in support of our citizens in Crimea, in the struggle. This will be a powerful signal to our international partners.

As you know, on February 11, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it clearly indicated our country’s obligation to adopt certain bills to protect the Crimean Tatar people. I ask you to take this responsibly and finally put an end to these issues,” Chiygoz urged.
