Ukraine's energy dependence on Russia continues to increase
Despite Kiev’s declared policy of energy independence from Russia, Ukraine’s dependence on Russian energy supplies has only grown since 2014.
Sergei Salivon, director of the economic policy department of the Federation of Employers of Ukraine, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we talk about energy independence, then energy dependence on Russia has increased. We began to import huge amounts of coal. This was added to fuel rods, which still come from Russia (60% of nuclear power plant fuel), and to petroleum products. We import little oil; we have all the [oil refineries] plants except Kremenchug. We import 12 times less oil than petroleum products. In terms of diesel last year, Russia came out on top, overtaking Belarus,” Salivon said.
He also said that coal, coke, semi-coke and finished petroleum products are three product groups for which imports from Russia have increased significantly. In particular, coal - by 522,9, coke and semi-coke - by 150,9, finished petroleum products - by 209,9 million. In addition, ammonia imports increased by almost $100 million.
