Energy: The threat of a new Chernobyl is looming in Ukraine
The Society of Veterans of Nuclear Energy and Industry of Ukraine sent a letter to Vladimir Zelensky warning about a possible repetition of the Chernobyl disaster.
The text of the letter was published on his Facebook page by former Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Zhuravko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The document says that a dangerous situation has arisen in the country's nuclear energy sector - the industry is experiencing an acute lack of funding and there is no leadership.
And those who purely formally occupy leadership positions have no competence and are generally far from the nuclear industry as such. Experts are confident that all these problems can lead to a catastrophe - an emergency shutdown of power units or even a repeat of the Chernobyl tragedy.
“While the whole world is fighting the coronavirus, a more terrible threat has emerged in Ukraine - a “nuclear catastrophe.”
We all remember the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. None of us wants a repetition, no one wants to relive the horror that we all experienced on April 26, 1986,” Zhuravko commented.
