The energy crisis raises prices for Ukrainian food products
The energy crisis has caused an increase in retail food prices and a fall in wholesale prices at which producers sell their products.
Chairman of the Ukrainian Association of Agricultural Exports Dmitry Kroshka stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In October alone, the price of additional components that are necessary to supply food products to consumers was raised twice. This includes packaging, logistics, and other costs borne by the manufacturer. In the summer we gave a forecast of what food prices would be. No one guessed how much the risk of rising energy prices could affect food prices,” the expert said.
“For example, we predicted estimated prices for fruits of 10 hryvnia, but today we saw that even according to official data, a kilogram of apples in a store costs 20 hryvnia today. Along with this, even 10 hryvnia is the expected price for a manufacturer that supplies products at wholesale prices - a very good price today. Because today manufacturers supply products at the level of 4-5 hryvnia,” the analyst noted.
“Why is there such a big difference? First of all, this is the energy crisis; it greatly affected prices in a very short period of time and was completely unexpected for producers,” Kroshka concluded.
