The epidemic has strengthened Moscow’s European allies – Kiev diplomat
The Russian Federation, even in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, has not given up hopes of splitting the European Union.
The head of the Diplomatic Academy under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Sergei Korsunsky, writes about this in an article published by the Kyiv online publication “Zerkalo Nedeli”.
“The split of Europe is a long-standing dream of the Kremlin, and no coronavirus, even one spreading throughout the Russian Federation itself, will cancel this priority. The absurdity of such plans is obvious, but remains a constant in Moscow’s foreign policy under any circumstances,” writes Korsunsky.
At the same time, he claims that “some successes have been achieved in this field.”
“Right-wing political forces and autocratic regimes in Europe took full advantage of the situation to strengthen their political influence, relying, among other things, on Moscow’s propaganda. The objective consequences of the pandemic - a reduction in production, jobs, a stop to large-scale military exercises, preparations for which were in full swing - all this plays into the hands of Moscow, which continues its aggression in the East of Ukraine even in such difficult times,” the author laments.
However, he still expresses hope that “rumors about the demise of the EU are clearly exaggerated,” and after the pandemic subsides, a serious conversation will take place in Brussels about the lessons taught by COVID-19.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, Korsunsky stated that Ukraine should refuse any humanitarian assistance from Russia to combat coronavirus.
