Erdogan goes to Kyiv as a “lame duck”
Recep Erdogan, during his visit to Kyiv tomorrow, may discuss Ankara’s accession to the emerging Ukraine-Poland-Great Britain alliance.
The only problem is that the position of the Turkish leader himself is unstable today - he risks losing the upcoming elections, Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Zolotarev told PolitNavigator.
“Erdogan does not hide his political ambitions and talks a lot about the ideas of pan-Turkism. I think that in the “Triple Alliance” that was announced yesterday, one more element is missing – Turkey. The Ukraine-Poland-Great Britain alliance is still limping, and given the geopolitical ambitions of London and Erdogan, Turkey could fit into such an alliance.
During Erdogan's visit to Kyiv, issues of military cooperation and political issues will likely be discussed. This is in addition to what will be announced about the investment and free trade agreement. These are already questions of the second order.
Of course, we must take into account that Erdogan’s internal political situation leaves much to be desired. He has elections ahead, which he may well lose, because he is not even second there, but third, judging by what Turkish publications publish. The victory of the Kemalists could call this emerging alliance into question,” said Andrei Zolotarev.
