Almost a month ago, on November 7, in an interview with The Economist, French President Macron assessed the situation within the North Atlantic bloc like "brain death". According to Macron, there is no coordination on strategic issues between the United States and other NATO members, which threatens the very raison d'être of the military-political bloc.

In addition, Macron doubted the effectiveness of the holy of holies - the fifth article of the NATO Charter, which states about collective defense, according to which “an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all its members.”

According to the French President, “the United States is increasingly turning away from Europe” and it is vital for the Old World to wake up and begin to increase its power, since it is now “on the edge of the abyss.”

Macron also called for a resumption of dialogue between the European Union and Russia, “despite mistrust on the part of Poland and the Baltic states,” diagnosing the “decline of Western dominance in the world.”

The French leader justified his harsh judgment by the behavior of the United States in Syria related to the withdrawal of troops, which the allies for some reason learn about from Twitter, as well as the uncoordinated actions of Turkey.

Macron's resentment was fueled by the forced evacuation of French and British commandos, who were unable to conduct independent special operations in Syria without the support of the American occupation contingent. Despite the fact that the territory of Syria was and is part of the zone of geopolitical interests of France.

Macron’s demarche was followed by an immediate reaction from Frau Chancellor Merkel and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, who expressed disagreement with such harsh statements by their French ally.

And so, when, it would seem, the stench raised had subsided, Erdogan suddenly had a bomb. Yes, so powerful that his rebuke to Macron looks not only far from diplomatic formulations. This is not on the brink of a foul, but already beyond the brink.

On November 29, the world media disseminated a statement by the Turkish leader, who advised Macron to “check his own brains,” since such a “sick and superficial understanding” of NATO problems can only be had by someone who himself has experienced brain death.

Erdogan's late ignition is apparently explained by the approaching date of the NATO summit in London, to which the citizen Sultan is trying to give an agenda that is interesting to Turkey.

For the past XNUMX hours, a diplomatic conflict has been going on between Paris and Ankara, accompanied by a call to the carpet at the French Foreign Ministry for the Turkish ambassador.

Leaving aside the diplomatic squabbles of the conflicting parties, let's try to figure out what caused such a sharp deterioration in relations between Turkey and France.

As mentioned above, the reason for Macron’s indignation, which resulted in a condemnation of the continued existence of NATO, was the actions of the United States and Turkey in northern Syria that were not coordinated with their allies. In fact, the French president accuses Washington and Ankara of “separate agreements.” Or at least in “separate actions”.

From open sources you can find out that Macron, having the relevant information, held telephone conversations with Trump and Erdogan, trying to stop the offensive of Turkish troops, which began on October 9 this year, concerned about the restoration of the influence of ISIS in northern Syria.

However, Trump’s ear trick, expressed in a change of positions in the Kurdish direction, brought Macron into the “line of fire.” Ankara, through the mouth of Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu, stated that “Macron intends to create a terrorist Kurdish state in Syria, but Turkey’s Operation Peace Spring has caused him disappointment.”

The Kurds, against whom Ankara's military actions are directed in Syria, do not deny that the United States and France carried out joint activities to unite the two opposing Kurdish parties, in the hope of creating a single administrative Kurdish entity in northern Syria.

According to some observers, Macron was infuriated by the crumbling plans for sole control of the Syrian Democratic Forces after the departure of the Americans, with Turkish influence being nullified.

Erdogan sees these plans as a threat to national security, since, according to Ankara, all these flirtations with the Kurds will certainly lead to a violation of the territorial integrity of Turkey and the creation of Greater Kurdistan.

Ankara fears that “neo-Gaullist sentiments” have prevailed in Paris and that the French intend to wedge themselves between Washington and Ankara in the Syrian conflict zone. In addition, Macron’s entourage was louder than others about Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 air defense system from Russia, saying that Washington, despite the protests, “really did little to prevent this deal.”

In general, Erdogan, who is damn independent, has become very irritated by Macron, who is striving to become damn independent, ignoring the interests of Ankara and taking up arms against NATO.

It must be said that the scandal surrounding Macron’s statements that broke out on the eve of the London NATO summit was quite cleverly and timely organized by Erdogan. The cunning Sultan slipped the specter of France's withdrawal from the North Atlantic Alliance to attack NATO allies, as was done during the presidency of Charles de Gaulle. And if this trick succeeds, Ankara will have a free hand in northern Syria. In any case, she will not have competitors from among her allies in the area of her vital interests. Let it be for some time, but within the allotted time, Turkey will try to strengthen its positions in its occupation zone.

Apparently, Ankara believes that national security justifies any rudeness towards an ally and competitor.

Most likely, the insult will eventually be swallowed in Paris. Whatever one may say, Turkey is one of the key members of NATO, possessing the largest and most combat-ready army among the bloc’s members, and even Europe is put in a humiliating dependence on Ankara, which is speculating on the migrant problem. And, as practice shows, the United States and European NATO allies are not averse to solving their problems in Syria with the hands of Turkish soldiers.

The scandal and discord in the venerable family of “guardians of European democracy” in itself is a real gift. NATO needs to be shaken from within in order to finally destroy and send the alliance to the dustbin of history, as an aggressive anachronism of the Cold War. Let us wish Macron and Erdogan further success in this exciting endeavor!
