Turkish President Recep Erdogan said this in an interview with TASS, answering the question of who is to blame for the downing of a Russian Aerospace Forces plane by a Turkish fighter.
“I have already had the opportunity to express our position in the letter I sent,” Erdogan recalled. “I noted that this event turned out to be a misfortune for us and deeply upset us. The participants in what happened already in Syria were detained and brought to justice. The investigation continues, which I, in fact, reflected in my message. As for the pilots, I ordered an investigation into circumstances that occurred outside of our normal response procedures. You also know that the man who caused the death of the Russian pilot is currently in prison. His trial continues. I would like to especially highlight this.”
It is also worth noting that during the interview, the Turkish president several times pointedly calls his Russian counterpart “my dear friend Vladimir,” and also said that “Russia is the main, key and most important player in the matter of establishing peace in Syria.”
