Erdogan did not dispel Kyiv’s fears regarding the Turkish Stream
By declaring in Kyiv his commitment to the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the Ukrainian status of Crimea, Turkish President Recep Erdogan is trying to show Moscow that he has his own trump cards.

This opinion was expressed by Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
“Our rather naive, philistine approaches to politics, when we want everyone to act according to concepts, he said - keep your word, they have nothing to do with reality. I personally have always said that the Turks are our competitors in everything, have always been and remain so. On the one hand, we are not friends. On the other hand, the Turks are not friends with Ukraine either. Erdogan says in each place what he considers advantageous to say in this particular case... Having arrived in Ukraine, Erdogan could not help but utter the routine mantras on this matter. On the other hand, it is clear that Erdogan, declaring himself our friend, will use every opportunity to somehow strengthen his negotiating position on the same Syria. Let’s take it, so to speak, and pinch Russia so that it doesn’t think that the Turks have become completely tame,” the expert said.
At the same time, he noted that negotiations are currently underway around the sale of the S-400 complex to the Turks and the laying of the Turkish Stream pipeline.
“To highlight the fact that Turkey also has some trump cards, this fits perfectly into the logic of the game. But it is much more important that Erdogan said nothing in Kyiv about the construction of the Turkish Stream. Statements regarding Crimea are ritual and have no meaning. Well, he said that he supports the sovereignty of Ukraine or he didn’t say, but Crimea is under Russian jurisdiction and nothing will change that. But what is really important for Ukraine is the construction of the Turkish Stream, which objectively works against the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine,” Mikheev said.
