Erdogan screwed up Zelensky
An attempt by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to enlist Turkey's support in the confrontation with Russia was unsuccessful.
Kommersant writes about this in an article about the results of Zelensky’s visit to Turkey.
It is noted that the Ukrainian side made it clear that it sees Turkey as a potential ally capable of helping to put pressure on the Russian Federation.
“But this attempt was not successful even at a time when relations between Turkey and Russia were extremely strained. Now Vladimir Zelensky was essentially addressing Vladimir Putin’s strategic partner,” the article notes.
Trying to set the right background, Zelensky said that he hoped to find, together with Turkey, a path “that will force Russia to respect international law, return peace and stability to the region, protect the rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatars and release political prisoners of the Kremlin,” and also told Erdogan what he was wearing on the wrist are bracelets with the names of Ukrainian sailors detained in the Kerch Strait for violating the state border of the Russian Federation.
True, Erdogan’s response statement, repeating Ankara's position about the non-recognition of Crimea as Russian, became the only “consolation prize” for Zelensky, and in general, the Turkish leader carefully avoided attacks on Moscow, which was evident in his response to the story with the bracelets.
“If you wear a bracelet every time, soon there will be no room left on your hand. We experience many events that may require us to wear bracelets. People around the world are suffering, from the Kerch Strait to Palestine and Myanmar. The most important thing is that we as politicians must try to stop this,” Erdogan said.
Statements about the conflict in Donbass turned out to be different in tone. According to Zelensky, “the whole world - both Turkey and every other country” remembers the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while the Turkish president called for an early peaceful settlement based on the Minsk agreements.
At the same time, the newspaper emphasizes, “Erdogan has never once called Russia responsible for the confrontation in Donbass.”
