Erdogan escalated the situation around Crimea
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the war over Nagorno-Karabakh a manifestation of “a crisis that began with the occupation of Crimea in the Black Sea.”
He told the Hürriyet Daily News.
The war in the Caucasus poses a threat to Crimea, Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea, permanent representative of the republic to the President of the Russian Federation Georgy Muradov told PolitNavigator.
“Of course, this is a danger. This is a dangerous and completely unacceptable development of the situation. We must proceed from the fact that the war in the southern Caucasus is a threat to our entire southern region. This is, in general, one space: the Black Sea region, the Caucasus region, it’s all interconnected. Of course, this is dangerous, because the intervention of such a power as Turkey in Caucasian affairs is fraught with the loss of sovereignty for Azerbaijan and creates a threat for Armenia. For now, I will only express this assessment,” Muradov said.
The head of the Department of Political Science at Northern State University, Alexander Irkhin, believes that Crimea need not fear Turkish aggression as long as Ukraine expands NATO’s presence on its territory.
“Regarding Crimea, look: as long as there is the West here in the form of American satellites in the Black Sea region, it is beneficial for Turkey that Crimea remains in Russia’s sphere of influence and in the geopolitical space of Russia. Why? Because if there are American bases here, it will be a much greater evil for the Turks.
The Turks historically share this space with Russia. A well-known neighbor, enemy and partner at the same time. This suits both Russia and Turkey; in this regard, points of contact did not disappear even during the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Irkhin told PolitNavigator.
