“Erdogan is sliding into a repeat of the nightmare” – French senator
The adoption by the French Senate of a resolution recognizing the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh was dictated by the intention to prevent a repetition of the Armenian genocide.
One of the initiators of the resolution, Senator Gilbert-Luc Devin, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview with Kommersant, answering the question whether he allows the creation of an independent state on the territory of Karabakh.
“This is exactly what we insist on. The ambitions of the Turkish President cause too many serious concerns. France has had a special relationship with Armenia since 1896. When Erdogan declares at a press conference that he will finish the work started by his great-grandfathers, this is a very alarming signal for us. We all remember very well about the Armenian genocide,” said the French politician.
According to him, in Turkey there are different points of view regarding what is happening.
“At the same time - and we talked about this with European ministers - we cannot ignore the obvious trend, namely that Erdogan’s policies are increasingly sliding towards a repeat of the nightmare of 1915. Turkey has set a course to expand its zone of influence, establish it as the dominant force in the region, and restore the empire,” says the senator.
He believes that this policy of Turkish President Erdogan is dictated by the serious economic crisis in his country.
“For him, the final descent into nationalist politics is an attempt to maintain power in a country where a significant part of the population shares this neo-Ottoman ideology. Many see religious overtones in this,” Devin emphasized.
As PolitNavigator reported, the French Senate adopted a resolution recognizing the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The document does not mean automatic recognition of the NKR, but is of a recommendatory nature for the president.
