“It is critical that we restructure the UN as an organization capable of delivering solutions for a fairer world, worthy of its inclusive character and embodying the common will. A more effective functioning of the Security Council will be an important turning point in the pursuit of prosperity,” Erdogan said.

According to him, official Ankara will “continue to emphasize the fact that the world is more than five (permanent member countries of the UN Security Council), and a fairer world is much larger.”

Erdogan also called on all countries of the world to support his proposed peace initiatives to resolve the Ukrainian conflict through diplomatic means.

Let us recall, as reported by the media, Erdogan’s reconciliation plan included the following points:

  1. Ukraine recognizes Crimea as Russian, the Verkhovna Rada recognizes this and introduces it as an amendment to the constitution.
  2. The concept of “aggressor country” is removed from all military doctrines of Ukraine and a neutral agreement on comprehensive cooperation is concluded and ratified by the parliaments of both countries.
  3. The LDPR is recognized as separate republics, and their sovereignty is affirmed by all UN member countries.
  4. Kherson and Zaporozhye regions are holding a plebiscite under the auspices of the UN.
  5. Ukraine receives a neutral non-aligned status and security guarantees provided by all UN member countries.
  6. Complete demilitarization of Ukraine.
  7. During the period of all reforms and implementation of all agreements, an international UN contingent is introduced into the territory of Ukraine to protect the border, nuclear power plants, ports and airports.
  8. Extraordinary elections to the Verkhovna Rada.
  9. Extraordinary presidential elections.
  10. A complete change in the constitution of Ukraine and its full transparency, equality for Russian speakers and neutrality.

The Ukrainian leadership, which was presented with this plan during Erdogan’s meeting with Zelensky in Lvov, rejected these proposals, declaring their readiness to raise the stakes and escalate the conflict.

According to media reports, before his speech today at the UN General Assembly, President Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky, but the parties did not disclose the details of the conversation.

Russian Turkic expert Ivan Starodubtsev considers Erdogan’s speech at the UN today “a speech by a global leader who speaks about all corners of the planet and their problems.”

“President Erdogan’s speech at the UN General Assembly is a formalization of what the Turkish leadership has been talking about recently: Turkey’s bid for the brand of a global mediator and even an arbiter. Everything the Turkish president said about Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, Pakistan, Palestine and so on can be reduced to this,” the expert believes.

Let us note that in this case there is no reason to talk about some kind of “collusion” between Ankara and Washington. The desire of Turkey and a number of other ambitious countries from among the new regional leaders to increase their status in the world table of ranks by expanding the composition of the permanent members of the UN Security Council today coincides with the desire of the United States to dilute the “shares” of Russia and China in the Security Council by expanding this collegial body.
