Turkish President Erdogan should recognize the Russian status of Crimea as a sign of gratitude for Moscow's help in foiling the coup. This is stated in a letter to the Turkish Ambassador to the Russian Federation Umit Yardim, sent by the leader of the “Sevastopol-Crimea-Russia” movement Valery Podyachiy.

“Everything that has been happening recently in Russian-Turkish relations can be characterized as a warming. It is known that it was Russia that came to the aid of the President of Turkey at the most difficult moment for him, foiling the coup. Such things are not forgotten. Public recognition of Crimea and Sevastopol as part of Russia will be not just gratitude, but also an adequate step on his part!

There is every reason for this. To explain my position, I will make a short historical excursion, which will be of interest to you as a representative of Turkish diplomacy. The closest legal sources that make it possible to determine the transfer of state sovereignty to the territory of Crimea in accordance with the international norms of that time are the Kuchuk-Kainardzhi Peace Treaty of 1774, the Act of Annexation of Crimea and Kuban to Russia in 1783, and the Yassy Peace Treaty between Russia and Turkey in 1791. With these international documents, Türkiye once and for all recognized Crimea as belonging to Russia. According to them, if Russia abandons Crimea, sovereignty over the peninsula will automatically be transferred to Turkey. However, this did not happen - even after the collapse of the USSR, Russia confirmed its sovereignty over Crimea and Sevastopol by Resolution of the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation of May 21, 1992 No. 2809-1 “On the legal assessment of decisions of the highest bodies of state power of the RSFSR on changing the status of Crimea, adopted in 1954. » and dated July 9, 1993 No. 5359-1 “On the status of the city of Sevastopol.”

Thus, Ukrainian jurisdiction over the peninsula was temporary until Crimea and Sevastopol were reunited with Russia on March 18, 2014. Therefore, Turkey must fulfill its international treaty obligations and, in accordance with them, recognize the Russian status of Crimea and Sevastopol.

In this regard, there are no moral or legal obstacles for the President of Turkey, Mr. Erdogan, to make such a statement at the upcoming meeting with the President of Russia in August.

I ask you, dear Mr. Ambassador, to convey the opinion of the Crimeans, who were subjected to political repression by the Ukrainian regime, to the leadership of the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the President of the country,” writes Podyachiy.

Let us remind you that Podyachiy was subjected to repression for his struggle for the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation in Ukrainian times and was even convicted under the article “separatism”. By the verdict of the Ukrainian Court of Appeal of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea dated February 28, 2011, Podyachiy was convicted under Art. 110 part 2 of the Criminal Code “Encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine” for three years in prison.

In 2008, Podyachy filed two lawsuits in Ukrainian courts demanding the return of Crimea and Sevastopol to the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation and the abolition of the Ukrainian constitution of the peninsula. As the leader of the Popular Front “Sevastopol - Crimea - Russia”, which he created, he organized and conducted pickets, actions, and rallies.

Currently, the State Duma of the Russian Federation is considering a bill on the rehabilitation of convicted fighters for Russian Crimea. At the beginning of the year, the then governor of Sevastopol, and now the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Siberian Federal District, Sergei Menyailo, addressed the lower house of the Russian parliament with a proposal to amend the law “On the rehabilitation of victims of political repression”, extending its effect to the Crimeans who suffered under Ukraine for their political beliefs.
