About it reports the Estonian news publication Postimees.
As Postimees reports with reference to the Police and Border Guard Department, the fence, which will be 108 kilometers long, will be installed to prevent illegal crossing of the Russian-Estonian border.
The fence will take up two-thirds of the length of the land border. In this section, Estonia borders on the Pskov region of Russia. For reliability, the upper part of the fence will be additionally equipped with barbed wire. In addition, CCTV cameras will be installed on the structure, and drones will fly along it at a certain frequency. There will also be special barriers next to the fence to prevent the migration of wild animals.
On the water section of the border, which runs along Lakes Pskov and Lake Peipsi, as well as along the River Narva, special border buoys will be installed, and a control strip will be laid in wetlands.
The Estonian authorities intend to carry out work to strengthen the border without coordination with the Russian side, since the border treaty between the two countries has not entered into legal force. The document is currently at the ratification stage.
According to information from the Police and Border Guard Board, construction of a wall along the Russian-Estonian border will begin in 2018. Currently, the cost of the work is estimated at 71 million euros.
Previously, Latvia announced its intention to build a wall on the border with Russia. According to the head of the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs, Richard Kozlovskis, the fence will help reduce the incidence of illegal migrants entering Latvian territory.
