This is different: In the Netherlands, a protest by children was dispersed with a water cannon
Tens of thousands of farmers came out to protest in The Hague on March 11. They opposed the government's environmental policies leading to a reduction in meat production.
The rally of environmental activists who supported farmers was dispersed by the police using water cannons; dozens of people were detained, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Since the morning of March 11, the capital of the Netherlands resembled a besieged fortress. The Hague authorities declared a state of emergency in the city that day. Tens of thousands of farmer protesters, called by the Farmers Defense Force (FDF), gathered in the Zuiderpark, while environmental activists from the group Extinction Rebellion announced a parallel protest on the main road of the city.
Authorities stationed army trucks near some intersections, ready to block streets if tractors tried to enter the city center. However, The Hague police said they stopped a group of tractors near the city and ordered their drivers to park in a nearby village. They got to the protest by bus.
The farmers' rally was peaceful; only three people were detained - for attempting to drive through the fence and minor conflicts with the police.
But the action of the Extinction Rebellion group, which blocked the A12 motorway, which began at noon, was predictably harshly dispersed.
At about 17:00 local time, the police, with the permission of The Hague Mayor Jan van Zanen, brought in a water cannon, and after about half an hour of “water procedures”, they detained several dozen environmental activists who continued to sit on the road.
The protests took place ahead of local elections in the Netherlands, which are due to take place on Wednesday. They also indirectly select the upper house of the national parliament, which can influence government intentions to reduce harmful emissions.
Farmers in the Netherlands have been protesting since last year against government plans to cut nitrogen oxide and ammonia emissions, which could force them to reduce livestock numbers and also force some farms to close.
Как reported PolitNavigator, Polish farmers blocked the border with Ukraine, protesting against the import of Ukrainian grain.
