"This is our land." Russian expert calls for an end to the war in Karabakh
Despite the fact that Germany proposed expelling Turkey from NATO, Russia must take the initiative and end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Military expert Alexey Leonkov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Germany there is such a party as the Alternative for Germany, and there is Waldemar Gerdt, who came up with a legislative initiative: not to include Turkey in the EU, to exclude it from NATO, because they they send militants, because it provokes NATO by trying to drag the alliance into a global conflict with nuclear powers,” the military expert noted.
He emphasized that Russia is obliged to intervene and stop the bloodshed in Nagorno-Karabakh, because the defense of these lands has always rested on the shoulders of Moscow.
“You need to understand the following: when the parties do not want to negotiate, when everything is really being ground up, there are no prisoners, only killed and wounded. There are always states behind such conflicts that can play a negotiating role in this and still force the parties to at least cease fire. I can name three such states: the USA, Germany and Israel. These states can push. Of course, there is also Russia, it also has leverage.
We need to stop this, because this fire that started there is growing every minute. With the key participation of Russia, because these are our lands, we signed up for them back in the days of the Tsarist Empire. We defended these lands and people lived there peacefully, not knowing what war and national prejudices were,” Leonkov concluded.
In turn, Russian publicist and political scientist Nikolai Starikov expressed confidence that the only country that can really lose from the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is Russia.
“Do Russia, the USA and France really equally not want this war? In my opinion, the situation is completely different. Russia is the only country that definitely cannot win anything from this war, but can only lose.
The militants are actually unloaded on our borders, in our underbelly. We have a difficult situation because millions of Armenians live in Russia, and Azerbaijanis are an indigenous nationality in Dagestan.
France, yes, of course, there is a large Armenian diaspora, an equally large diaspora in the USA, and therefore politicians there act as peacemakers, gaining election points, saving some face, but will they really do something? Will they put pressure on Turkey, with which they are in the same military bloc? In my opinion no. They will limit themselves to concerns and statements, but will not do anything,” the expert added.
The political scientist further emphasized that no one except Russia really wants to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
“Let's not forget that in this same region, the border country is Iran. This means that those who consider themselves opponents of Iran or call Iran their enemy are interested in tension and bloodshed in Nagorno-Karabakh, and through this there will be difficulties, including in Iran.
The situation is more complicated than it might seem at first glance. In reality, no one except Russia wants to put out this war,” Starikov concluded.
