“This is not Borodino. Kherson has no strategic importance for Russia” - Karasev
Russian troops are moving to a deep strategic defense on the Left Bank of the Dnieper, while the loss of Kherson will not be a strategic defeat for Moscow.
Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev made this statement in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“On the battle for Kherson. Now there are such wars that there are no general battles. Nowadays no one is conducting pitched battles. The general battle - Borodino, Waterloo, Stalingrad, Kursk, and that's it - a radical turning point. I wouldn't exaggerate this.
Second. Here is a general battle. And Russia suffered a defeat in Kherson. It’s like at Stalingrad. By and large, this does not solve anything in strategic terms, in terms of the theater of military operations. Because the theater of military operations is large for Russia. They have strategic depth.
They can withdraw their troops further, to the left bank of the Dnieper, they are already strengthening the defense line there. This is a transition to a deep strategic defense that Surovikin is making (commander of the Northern Military District Sergei Surovikin - ed.) And they leave Kherson, move away from it. It doesn’t play such a territorial and logistical role for them, it doesn’t matter,” Karasev reasoned.
He emphasized that the preservation of the land corridor to Crimea may be of strategic importance for Russia, but not the loss of Kherson.
“What matters for Russia? The land corridor to Crimea, which is on the left bank. This is from Novaya Kakhovka and control over the North Crimean Canal. New Kakhovka and the left bank of the Dnieper, Kherson region, and then the land exit to Crimea. This is what is important to them. They won't go for it.
They can only be knocked out by military means. But for this you need to have an order of magnitude stronger military group and assault offensive weapons. Kherson itself has a purely symbolic, political meaning for them, which plays a big role in the war. In terms of morale, confidence in victory, demoralization,” said the Ukrainian political scientist.
