“It’s none of our business”: public support for Ukraine is declining in the US
The need for military support for Ukraine in American society is decreasing.
This, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the sociological company Ipsos commissioned by Reuters.
“The two-day poll, which ended on Wednesday, found that only 41% of respondents agreed with the statement that Washington “should give Ukraine weapons,” compared with 35% who disagreed, and the rest were unsure,” Reuters points out.
At the same time, a previous poll conducted in May showed that then 46% of Americans supported sending weapons, and 29% were against it.
“Decreased support has a negative impact on congressional support and ultimately on the prospects for additional relief packages,” said Elizabeth Hoffman, director of congressional and government affairs at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, commenting on the survey results.
It is noteworthy that support for Ukraine is falling among voters of both major US parties.
Thus, about 52% of Democrats supported arming Ukraine in the latest poll, while in May the figure was 61%. Among Republicans, support for sending weapons to Kyiv fell to 35% from 39% in May.
About 34% of Democrats who took part in the survey agreed with the statement that Ukraine's problems "are none of our business and we should not interfere." Republicans who have the same opinion – 56%.
