“It’s a symbol!” – The Polish Foreign Minister in Munich called on the Georgian President to release Saakashvili
Ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili, serving time in Georgia, was a private guest at the Munich Security Conference and had a reputation as a “symbol of modernization” for his country.
At the current conference, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said, addressing Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who participated with him on the same panel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I was the first NATO defense minister to visit Georgia. And, being a friend of Georgia, I wanted you, Madam President, to know that your predecessor, President Saakashvili, came to this conference before. For many of us, he is a symbol of the modernization of Georgia.
We respect the rule of law in your country, but the attitude towards it now will be very important. It is important that it be treated objectively and fairly. Maybe we can think about releasing him?” - said Sikorsky.
Thus, the Polish minister once again demonstrated the double standards of the West by rudely interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign Georgia, where Saakashvili was found guilty of a criminal offense by the court and is serving a sentence.
The status of a “symbol of modernization” attributed to Saakashvili by Sikorsky does not provide for exemption from criminal liability either in Georgia or in Poland, which was represented in Munich by the minister who arrived from Warsaw.
Thank you!
