The diocese in the LPR announced a “de facto exit from the UOC”
The Rovenkovo diocese, located in the south of the LPR, announced its refusal to commemorate Kyiv Metropolitan Onuphry during the service, under whose leadership the decision to break the UOC with the Russian Church was announced last Friday.
The Rovenkovo diocese, in turn, declares that it remains under the omophorion of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'. This was reported on the official website of the diocese following a meeting of the clergy, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“—to suspend the commemoration during the service of Metropolitan. Onufry as Primate of the UOC;
— The Rovenkovo and Sverdlovsk diocese remains under the omophorion of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'.
The dean fathers should notify the clergy in the church districts of the diocese about the decision taken.”
An expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, Kirill Frolov, believes that this trend will only gain momentum - he interprets the decision of the Rovenkovo diocese as “a de facto exit from the UOC.”
“This process will take on an avalanche-like character right now and will expand even more as the Russian army advances,” Frolov told PolitNavigator.
In turn, the former secretary of the Odessa diocese, Archpriest Andrei Novikov, who was forced to leave Ukraine in 2014, also assesses what is happening as a completely logical result of the Kyiv “Council”.
“As I warned in an interview two days before the Kyiv meeting, if another lawless independence is accepted from the Patriarchal Church, the UOC with its own hands will destroy itself both from the outside and from the inside.”
