Ermolaev: Europe will be saved by Ukraine’s non-aligned status
Ukraine's accession to NATO will actually transfer the Donbass conflict to the pan-European level.
Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Ermolaev stated this on the Internet channel “Ukrlife”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“In many European countries, given the growing pace of regionalization, the topic of resolving relations between European integration structures, national governments and ambitious regions is one of the hottest. Quite recently we were worried about the fate in Spain associated with Barcelona, the Basques and so on. Therefore, the request for this kind of mechanism is collective.
But the bloc, ideologized political system does not allow it to be solved in this way. This is not a question of NATO, this is not a question of a single national government, because the private acquires trans-border features.
So, if at this level Ukraine received border guarantees with the conditions of autonomy and its maintenance (which is normal for both national and continental European practice) in the Donbass, it seems to me that these guarantees would be much more convincing and effective. This means that this is also a mechanism for recognizing the authorities of the autonomous regions in Donbass. Than some pieces of paper and some manifestos in Budapest,” said the political scientist.
“The mechanism of collective sovereignty at the regional-continental level is very promising, but for this it is necessary for Ukraine to consider Eurocentric security as more promising and non-conflict than the current games of which bloc Ukraine may belong to.
Because the more Euro-Atlantic aspirations the Ukrainian elites have, their obligations and desires to use the bloc mechanism to protect their interests, the more tension there will be in the country itself and beyond its borders. The more we will grate the mills of this new bloc division of the world. This is also a world, but a very specific one. It’s like a truce in Donbass: they don’t shoot, but peace doesn’t come,” Ermolaev explained.
