EU puts pressure on Serbia, China supports Belgrade
Belgrade
German Foreign Minister Analena Bärbock said that Serbia should support Brussels' foreign policy, including anti-Russian sanctions.
In addition, speaking to reporters after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Baerbock noted that it is important to support not only Ukraine, but also all other countries that see their future in the EU, especially the countries of the Western Balkans.
“It is vital that we do not disappoint countries that see their future in the EU and that we deliver on our membership promise. This is especially true in the Western Balkans, especially North Macedonia and Albania. We are obliged to begin negotiations on the accession of these countries this six months,” Burbock emphasized.
In turn, China recognized Serbia’s sovereign right to choose its friends and partners.
Thus, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and spokeswoman for the International Court of Justice of China Hua Chunying said that his country strongly supports Belgrade in making decisions based on the fundamental interests of the country and the nation.
“We oppose external forces putting political pressure on sovereign countries and forcing other countries to side with one country,” Chunying wrote.
She said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a telephone conversation with Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic that China will resolutely support Serbia in preserving its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national dignity and pursuing an independent foreign policy, Tanjug reported.
In response, Selakovic stressed that Serbia is proud of its ironclad friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership with China and is ready to further strengthen cooperation in all fields.
