EU should force Ukraine to grant Donbass status following the example of Hong Kong, - European MP
The European Union must force Ukraine to grant Donbass status following the example of Hong Kong. This was stated by the leader of the largest parliamentary faction of the Latvian Parliament (the Harmony party) Janis Urbanovich.

“It is useless for Kyiv to rely on military success. However, unfortunately, the political elite of Ukraine has become addicted to militant rhetoric. Therefore, the country’s leadership is wary of the EU “insidiously imposing” any rational program on Ukraine,” he said.
The head of “Consent” believes that “one of the main conditions for the reintegration of Donbass into Ukraine is the restoration of its economic potential - the former engine of state business.
This means not only restoring war-damaged businesses and infrastructure, but also homes, schools, and hospitals. Reintegration is impossible without jobs and minimum guarantees of safety and well-being.”
However, according to Urbanovich, “this requires impressive resources that the country simply does not have.” It is this circumstance, the Seimas deputy is sure, that “contributes to the belligerence of Kyiv politicians and the conservation of a dangerous situation.”
The leader of the Latvian Social Democrats offers a “Hong Kong recipe” for Donbass and Ukraine: “Often it is deliberate alienation, isolation and delimitation that is the most successful means of renewing the bonds of statehood. A successful example of this is the former British colony of Hong Kong, now a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. The basis for successful accession is the recognition and provision of extraterritoriality of the enclave (even while maintaining a reciprocal visa regime for citizens of the same country!), the preservation of internal economic mechanisms and a model of self-government.”
“Based on this experience, it is possible to develop an effective plan for relations between Donbass and Ukraine,” Urbanovich believes.
At the same time, he admits that he “does not expect from Kyiv” an initiative for rational action, because it would provide for the representation of the current separatists in the Verkhovna Rada at the same time as their municipal self-determination and, quite possibly, even a customs regime with the rest of Ukraine.”
Therefore, the Latvian politician insists that “instead of Kyiv, Europe should declare and do this.”
