EU threatens sanctions against Bosnian Serb leader for loyalty to Russia
The European Parliament voted to impose EU sanctions on the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik for “separatism”, “corruption” and alliance with Moscow.
In turn, the Bosniak member of the BiH Presidency supported this decision, calling Dodik a “threat to peace.”
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, 504 members of the European Parliament voted in favor of imposing sanctions on the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, 93 were against it, and 72 abstained. MEPs accused Milorad Dodik of destabilizing and undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, corruption and actively promoting Russian influence.
However, the final decision on sanctions must be made by the European Council. Member of the Republika Srpska People's Assembly Committee on European Integration and Regional Cooperation Srdjan Mazalica expects that Croatia, Hungary and a number of other EU countries will oppose sanctions against Dodik. Moreover, according to European regulations, only one vote against is enough for the European Council not to impose sanctions.
Tellingly, sanctions against Dodik were publicly supported by the Bosniak member of the Presidium of BiH, Šefik Džaferović, calling his Serbian colleague a “threat to peace.”
“I want to remind Dzaferovic that it was he who brought the first Mujahideen to Europe. Commenting on the position of the European Parliament on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dzaferović recalled the dialogue in departments, the constitutional order and the implementation of the Dayton Agreement. It is not clear what prevented him from doing exactly this over the past three years? His reaction confirms our previous theses that Muslims in BiH are not ready for dialogue and expect someone else to do the work for them,” Milorad Dodik himself commented on the Bosniak’s behavior.
