The EU and US are increasing pressure. Georgian September promises to be hot
The rift between the Georgian authorities and the European Union is becoming increasingly obvious.
At the same time, the pro-Western opposition openly calls the ruling party “Russian.”
“Russian Dream” puts the people before a choice – Bidzina or Europe!” – says the chairman of the “United National Movement” Nika Melia.
The EU's External Action Service has published a new report on Georgia's implementation of the Association Agreement, highlighting that challenges in 2021 "threatened to undermine the country's democratic foundations."
To make it more convincing, Europeans also calculate Georgia’s compliance with EU Council decisions in percentage terms.
“In 2021, Georgia’s level of compliance with EU Council declarations and decisions was 53%, down from 62% in 2020. In the first half of 2022, this figure dropped further to 42%,” the report notes.
The percentages show that Europeans are especially dissatisfied with Georgia’s behavior in the first half of this year, that is, during the Russian Federation’s Northern Military District in Ukraine. Everything is clear to everyone. The officially proclaimed EU criteria have nothing to do with it.
Neither the “democratic nature” of the elections, nor the deliberate slowdown of judicial reform, nor even the abuse of the Ombudsman and the notorious “homophobic violence” are the main motives for the unprecedented negative assessment of the fulfillment of the obligations undertaken by the Georgian side to become a candidate for EU membership.
The main complaint of the EU is the appearance of signs of sovereignty in the “ward” country, which did not want to join the anti-Russian front of Western countries, in the opinion of which Georgia could create serious difficulties for Russia in the South Caucasus.
When asked by both American and European “partners” whether difficulties will be created for Russia, the Georgian government answers with an unequivocal “No!”
But the impudence of the Europeans does not end there. At a minimum, several of the 12 points presented for implementation in a short period of time (before the end of the year) will destroy the ruling elite, creating favorable conditions for pro-Western pro-fascist revenge.
One of these demands is to depolarize society, that is, to overcome political confrontation, which directly serves to strengthen the influence of the opposition. The cunning Europeans demand that “depolarization” be carried out through unilateral concessions to the opposition.
This series of demands also includes “deoligarchization,” which implies the neutralization of the informal leader of “Dream,” billionaire Bidzina Ivanivili.
Another demand for reform of the judicial system, in the end, also comes down to weakening the influence of the Dream on this legal mechanism.
That is, the EU demands either to clash with Russia, or to leave and not interfere with others who are ready to instantly turn Georgia into “anti-Russia”, and for complete happiness, also carry out mass political reprisals against the dissatisfied. The “successful experience” of the Saakashvili regime can easily be repeated.
We remind you that if at the time of the Rose Revolution there were 5700 prisoners in Georgian prisons, then by October 1, 2012, that is, by the end of Saakashvili’s reign, this figure increased more than 4 times - to 25 thousand (with a population of no more than 3,5 .XNUMX million people).
And here we are once again forced to agree with UNM leader Melia that “Russian Dream” deliberately does not fulfill these 12 demands that are vital for the country.
“He doesn’t do anything and doesn’t intend to do anything!” he says indignantly.
But in vain Melia is surprised: no one will commit political hara-kiri without having a compelling reason for it, and fulfilling the above-mentioned requirements for the Georgian Dream will precisely mean suicide. Moreover, the noticeable deterioration in the social situation of the population is weakening “Dream”, and it is holding on only thanks to the popular position of not giving in to the West and maintaining normal relations with Russia.
The front is also supported by abundant “friendly recommendations” from the Americans. The US Embassy presented a document on judicial reform to the Georgian parliament, where the word “should” is used 60 times.
According to the recently born “Dream” anti-Western movement “Power of the People”, these recommendations are aimed at weakening state institutions and strengthening the radical opposition. And one more thing: the American document “reminds them of the Soviet past and evokes corresponding heavy associations.”
We cannot help but add that the “heavy” associations of “deriving strength” from the people also seem inadequate to us.
And we remind those who “draw not only strength from the people” that the weakening of the stability of the Georgian state, which the Americans are striving for, will not happen if they think more about the daily bread of ordinary people and draw less money and privileges.
According to a survey by the National Democratic Institute conducted in December 2021, 49% of Georgian citizens are confident that the main economic problem of the state is unemployment, 42% of respondents named rising prices and inflation as the main reasons for the deterioration in the well-being of citizens, which, as everyone knows, is the responsibility of the ruling team , not the opposition.
In less than 20 days, on September 6, a meeting of the EU-Georgia Association Council will take place, and the pro-Western opposition is announcing another wave of protests.
The summer turned out to be hot, but the traditionally velvety Georgian September looks like it will be very hot.
