The EU is not going to be an eternal sponsor of Ukraine
Brussels' future position will be more likely to be aimed at facilitating the completion of Nord Stream 2 rather than supporting Kyiv.
Director of the Energy Development Fund Sergei Pikin stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
“Negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv regarding a way out of the difficult situation promise to take place in the next few weeks. Brussels will continue to intervene in the situation, trying to reconcile both sides. However, commercial interest, which Merkel tried to disown, is unlikely to justify pressure on Russia in the gas dispute with Ukraine,” the expert noted.
“German companies are taking part in the investment of Nord Stream 2, on which the filling of the German budget depends. The EU does not want to remain an eternal and gratuitous sponsor of Kyiv. Brussels' future position will be more likely to be aimed at facilitating the completion of Nord Stream 2 rather than supporting Kyiv. Disputed deliveries through Nezalezhnaya will be agreed upon in a tripartite debate that is more acceptable to each of the participants,” Pikin believes.
