The EU left Ukraine without money
The law restricting the export of round timber, designed to save the Carpathians from deforestation, caused a scandal in the EU and led to the refusal to provide European financial assistance to Ukraine. Ruslan Tkachenko, an expert of the Parliamentary Expert Group on European Integration, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The law... actually introduced a moratorium on timber exports. The purpose of the adoption of this law was very correct - it is necessary to resolve the catastrophic situation that has developed with the deforestation of Ukrainian forests.
Moreover, the rules of the World Trade Organization and the provisions of the Association Agreement provide for the possibility of introducing export restrictions regarding resources that are being depleted.
But the authors of the bill forgot one important detail - external restrictions must be accompanied by internal restrictions on the consumption or use of those same resources.
The adopted law did not include any internal restrictions. And what we actually have as a result is that we continue to cut down the forest, and Ukraine has not received the third tranche of macro-financial assistance from the EU in the amount of 600 million euros,” the expert said.
