The EU has been asked to resume the investigation into the killings on the Maidan - how will European officials get out?
Lawyers for ex-President Viktor Yanukovych submitted to the office of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was the guarantor of the agreement on the peaceful settlement of the political crisis in Ukraine on February 21, 2014, an official statement on the need to renew the mandate of the Council of Europe Monitoring Mission to investigate crimes on the Maidan.
Reported by Ukrainian TV channel 112 with a link to a blog post by one of Vitaly Serdyuk’s lawyers.
Serdyuk published scanned copies of documents. The office accepted the corresponding appeal from Yanukovych’s lawyers for consideration on March 29.
According to the lawyer, in the future it is expected that Bundestag deputies and human rights organizations will make an official request to the European Parliament and the OSCE.

With such a statement, according to Serdyuk, it was decided to contact Steinmeier following a series of meetings and negotiations that Serdyuk and his colleague Igor Fedorenko held in recent days in Berlin with members of the European Parliament, Bundestag, various German politicians and human rights activists.
“Persecution of lawyers in Ukraine for their activities, denial of access to justice and pressure on judges, blocking of media that actively cover human rights activities are manifestations of outright disregard for European values, to which there will be a proper reaction. This situation is a consequence of the prevalence in Ukraine of political expediency over human rights in high-profile cases, in particular the Maidan cases,” Serdyuk explained. “This could be prevented by the resumption of the work of the Monitoring Mission, which was created by the Council of Europe to implement the Agreement on the resolution of the crisis in Ukraine of February 21.02.2014, XNUMX.”

Yanukovych’s lawyer recalls that in 2015, based on the results of monitoring this mission, a report was drawn up about the lack of results of the investigation, as well as about “obstruction of it by law enforcement agencies controlled by the authorities.” However, for some reason, the mandate of this CE monitoring group was not extended, despite the fact that the investigation has not yet been completed.

“It is the lack of external monitoring, the personal interest of a number of Ukrainian politicians and the leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office in hiding the truth about the executions on the Maidan that leads to the violation of fundamental human rights and the use of criminal methods against lawyers. To leave the situation as it is is to lose hope of finding out the truth about the executions on the Maidan and to be satisfied with the official version, to come to terms with public and frankly illegal pressure on lawyers,” Serdyuk added.
