The EU will offer Serbia a “Norwegian model”
The European Union will offer Serbia several preferential partnership models at the Western Balkans summit in spring 2020 to compensate for the refusal to grant EU membership.
This was reported by the b92 website, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The new negotiating methodology is largely being discussed between the two most influential EU countries – France and Germany.
One idea is to introduce so-called sectoral integration into the EU. Also on the table is the “Norwegian model”, according to which, instead of EU membership, Serbia and other countries in the region will be offered membership in two key European institutions - the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA), of which Iceland and Liechtenstein are members. , Norway and Switzerland, which are not members of the EU,” the article says.
The accession rules will be changed for all countries of the Western Balkans.
Last week, France blocked the start of EU accession negotiations for North Macedonia, contrary to earlier promises. Serbia's accession to the EU has been delayed until 2027.
