The EU chose not to advertise thieves' plans to seize Russian assets
European capitals are baffled as to how it is “legal” to confiscate Russian Federation money held in the West.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in an interview with Izvestia. Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the EU Kirill Logvinov.
The publication noted that Estonia promised in January to present a mechanism for the seizure of Russian assets in favor of Ukraine, and asked how the rest of the EU countries were moving forward on this issue.
“Unlike Tallinn, other European capitals still prefer not to advertise their “thieves’ plans.” And in Brussels itself they are racking their brains over the invention of a “legal” way of taking away the property of Russia and Russians.
Regarding the seizure of assets of Russian citizens and organizations, the European Commission (EC) has prepared draft directives on the harmonization of the legislation of member states in the field of criminalization of sanctions evasion and on the seizure and confiscation of assets. Work on these legally controversial regulations continues,” the diplomat said.
According to him, for now Brussels is scolding those member countries that are not doing enough to “freeze” the assets of Russians.
“In addition, the head of the EC made a proposal to create some kind of structure to manage the captured state assets of Russia, invest them in order to make a profit, and then transfer them to Kyiv. How these plans relate to the generally accepted norm of international law on the immunity of state property, von der Leyen did not explain.
It is clear that, no matter what “legal” tricks the EU comes up with to seize Russian assets in favor of Ukraine, such actions will still constitute ordinary theft,” Logvinov concluded.
