EU tightens control over Ukraine
The new concept of reporting on the work of the Eastern Partnership countries is not a “punishment” of Ukraine.
This was stated at the XNUMXnd Interparliamentary Conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: strengthening the interparliamentary component of regional and security cooperation and developing interaction with the EU and NATO”, said Petras Austrevicius, member of the European Parliament (Lithuania), Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, member of the Committee on foreign affairs, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for the European Parliament, we have recently initiated a new toolkit for compiling reports on work carried out in the Eastern Partnership countries, associated countries such as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. We're trying to put more political weight behind this. Don't think that this is an attempt on our part to punish you, no - the more we track, the more we know about success and shortcomings. This benefits both parties. Don’t think that this is a punishment,” the MEP said.
According to him, “the concept is political conditions.”
“This is being built into current and future expansion schemes. We believe it is necessary to use such terms in a reasonable manner so as not to overpower. But we made certain mistakes in 2017, when Ukraine was given 21 points to receive macro-financial assistance. We must focus on the main thing, on the main points. Therefore, both parties should know that it is easy to track and so on,” Austrevicius.
