The agency reports that the crisis in Ukraine has exacerbated the information confrontation between Russia and the West, which has not really subsided since the Cold War. Now, according to BBC observers, the information war is moving to Europe.
The European External Action Service is launching a new propaganda campaign for Russian speakers in Eastern Europe and the EU. In January, the European Parliament called for the development of a “communication strategy to combat the Russian propaganda campaign,” and Deutsche Welle, Radio Liberty and Euronews, funded by the United States and Germany, are stepping up their activities. The only channel operating in the West, Russia Today, is also increasing its funding by a significant 75%.
BBC columnist Stephen Ennis notes the success of the RT channel not only among Russian speakers in the post-Soviet space, but also among foreign speakers in Europe. While the TV channel cannot compete on an equal footing with CNN and Fox in the broadcast audience, it has long been ahead of them in terms of views on Youtube.
