The EU will force Ukraine to conclude an unprofitable contract with Gazprom
Most likely, Ukraine will not be able to get Gazprom to renegotiate the gas transit contract on new terms.
Energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev stated this on the UMN channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Negotiations in May will lead to nothing. Most likely, Gazprom will hold out until January 1, 2020 and then say to Europe: “Well, do you need our gas?” - “But what about it!” He will once again put pressure on Kyiv: “Let them extend the transit agreement, say, until July 1, 2020, and we will immediately supply gas in the required volumes.”
And what will the European companies that have signed contracts to supply gas to specific European consumers say? “We don’t care that you didn’t agree, your relations with the Russian Federation. Give us gas." And they will give gas. Before the commissioning of the second branch of Nord Stream 2, which probably will not be completed before January 1, but will be completed before February 1 or March 1,” the expert said.
He also recalled that Ukrainian politicians say that they require Russia to sign all future contracts according to European rules, as required by the European Commission.
“But if Russia cuts off gas to European consumers from January 1, 2020, the same thing will happen as in 2009 - unprecedented pressure on Kyiv from the EU to ensure uninterrupted transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine. Then we said that it was Russia that was cutting off the gas, and to us: “We don’t know anything, ensure uninterrupted transit. You are stealing Russian gas,” Ryabtsev emphasized.
