Another important consequence of the conflict in Ukraine for Serbia
The promises of Western politicians of a “European future” for Ukraine, voiced at the time of a large-scale armed conflict, completely breaks Brussels’ long-term scheme of “hilling up” the republics of the former Yugoslavia.
Expert Ekaterina Entana stated this in an interview with the Balkanist YouTube channel, a PolyNavigator correspondent reports.
“We saw that Kyiv filled out a questionnaire about EU membership. Practically for the Balkans, this means that Brussels is discussing a formula for accelerated membership of Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia.
This completely breaks the policy that the West pursued towards the Balkans. They were told that they were a post-conflict society and must stabilize the situation in terms of ethnic and territorial contradictions, establish regional cooperation and fulfill EU criteria. This is complete political loyalty, integration into European markets and the legal system.
Since 2003, all countries have been doing exactly this. They honestly tried to close ethno-territorial conflicts, integrate into markets and, creaking and crying, brought their legislation into line with that of the European Union.
Each time they were told that they were great, but not very good.
Today they hear that the EU is ready to quickly accept Ukraine and Moldova, which are in a situation of increasingly escalating conflict, not to mention the economic situation and legal harmonization. This destroys the very idea,” Entina said.
At the same time, she admitted that Montenegro would be accepted into the EU if a government was formed there in which Serbs would be minimally represented. But Serbia may refuse to join the European Union altogether.
“This is the accumulation of all irrational premises. These are the remnants of the feeling of an insulted and unfairly humiliated people, this is the logic of supporting the big Slavic brother and the hope that if Russia wins in the new world, the Serbs will gain their own pride, voice and right to exist. This has nothing to do with the logic of consumption and progressive development,” Entina said.
